🐾 Meet Nathan: From Hotdog Heist to Happy Home

Nathan’s story begins on the backroads between Woodstock and Saugerties, where this wily 80-pound American Bulldog mix spent nearly two months surviving on his own. White and tan, with a heart as big as his blocky head, Nathan became something of a local legend.

One unforgettable moment? A neighbor’s video caught him sneaking through their pet door and raiding the refrigerator for hotdogs. That clever move ended up inspiring his name—because when the animal control officer finally captured him using hotdogs as bait, Nathan was born.

Nathan spent the spring, summer, and early fall at the Saugerties Animal Shelter, where volunteers (including me, Vincent Metzo) fell in love with his sweet nature. I walked him regularly, took him on “doggy day outs,” and brought him to adoption events to help him find his forever home.

Nathan’s loving temperament made him a shelter favorite, but at 80 pounds, he’s also a big responsibility. Late that summer, he was adopted by a couple with another dog. Sadly, after about 10 days, the match wasn’t the right fit, and Nathan returned to the shelter.

Not one to give up, I started a weekly Overlook Mountain hike with Nathan, both to give him adventure and to raise awareness in hopes of finding him the perfect family. Nathan quickly became a familiar face on the trails and at community events—including the Woodstock Halloween Parade, where his charm shone.

After months of walking, adventuring, and cheering him on, I decided to foster Nathan myself. A few weeks later, it was official: Nathan had found his forever home—with me.

Nathan’s journey from abandoned stray to beloved family member shows the power of community, compassion, and (of course) hotdogs.
